This Brian De Palma fellow isn’t getting any sympathy from me.  He’s crying to the press that his new movie ‘Redacted’ has been censored. What’s actually happened? Well as the Reuters article explains, “The film’s distributor, Magnolia Pictures, ordered the faces of dead Iraqis shown in a montage of photographs at the end of the film be blacked out.“ They were afraid of being sued by the families for profiting off the images of the dead.
None of the films content was changed; we’ll still being seeing, “…the true story of a group of U.S. soldiers who raped and killed a 14-year-old Iraqi girl and murdered members of her family.” What’s disturbing to me is that this De Palma fellow and his fans insist that this one horrific event stands as an indictment against all our men and women in uniform. Seemingly ignoring the prosecutions of all those involved.
De Palma could have made a movie showcasing Iraqis who are standing up to build their nation under constant threat, or the untold sacrifices made by U.S. troops. Instead he took an extreme example to cast our soldiers as monsters. It’s not surprising though, he did the same thing nearly 20 years ago. Perhaps Brian De Palma should try something new.
